Originally the cupcake evolved in the United States in the 19th century, and it was revolutionary because of the amount of time it saved in the kitchen. There was a shift from weighing out ingredients when baking to measuring out ingredients. According to food historians there are two theories for why they are called cupcakes: one, the cakes were originally cooked in cups and two; the ingredients used to make the cupcakes were measured out by the cup.  This also meant that in the days of hearth ovens the smaller cupcakes were easier and quicker to bake than large slab cakes.

Cupcakes have evolved into a pop culture trend in the culinary world. They have spawned dozens of bakeries devoted entirely to them.  The possibilities of flavours and designs are endless and old or young no one can resist a cupcake! While chocolate and vanilla remain classic favourites, there are no limits to the flavours cupcakes come in.  There has recently been a trend to create the most unusual cupcakes such as Korma cupcakes complete with a mango Chutney topping!!
