Diamond Jubilee cake is completed The summer of 2012 is expected to be a like no summer London and country has seen before. With the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games being held in the UK over the summer, millions of people from the UK and abroad will descend upon London and other parts of the UK to enjoy a truly memorable summer of pageantry, pomp and sporting prowess. Let’s hope the weather holds. At Dunn’s Bakery we have taken a particular interest in the Queens Diamond Jubilee cake. Military caterers have baked a wonderful cake for the Diamond Jubilee Cake. Instructors from the Defence Food Services School at Worthy Down near Winchester, have spent the past six weeks creating a 70kg tiered cake. It has been topped with a crown made entirely from sugar and the cake reflects the Silver, Gold and Diamond Jubilees, the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force. The cake will be formally presented to the Queen at the Diamond Jubilee parade and muster on Saturday. ... http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/559/diamond-jubilee-cake-is-completed http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/559/diamond-jubilee-cake-is-completed 17 May 2012, 5:37 pm http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/feed/ Wet start to spring wedding season The start of the wedding season in the UK typically coincides with the start of spring. Officially spring began on the 20th of March which means we should be well into the wedding season. For couples that tied the knot this time last year the UK was enjoying an unusually dry and warm spring. Sadly the same can’t really be said about this year. A ‘wash-out’ wedding is something the bride and groom fear most. It is a day they have put a great deal of time, effort and money into and would like to look back on it with only the finest memories. However, the wedding day is ultimately about two people making a lifelong commitment to each other and then celebrating with the people they love, their families and friends. If you are having a spring wedding, our advice is to pay close attention to the weather in the weeks leading up to the wedding. If there is a high chance of rain on the day, then measures should be taken such as ensuring there is enough shelter for people not to get wet. Sadly, we cannot control the weather on our wedding. However just about everything else on that special day we can control. Between the bride and groom almost everything is decided; the guest list, the venue, the wedding dress, the wedding cake, the catering, the entertainment, the flowers and the photographer are all your choice. Looking at the Met Office forecast for the coming days and weeks it seems that the weather will continue to be quite changeable, with heavy rain showers, strong winds and breaks of sunshine across the UK. So, to all those tying the knot in the coming days and weeks we send our congratulations and wish you a lifetime of happiness, and good weather! ... http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/495/wet-start-to-spring-wedding-season http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/495/wet-start-to-spring-wedding-season 26 April 2012, 2:42 pm http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/feed/ Easter Chicks Dunn’s Bakery Handmade Easter Chicks! ... http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/521/easter-chicks http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/521/easter-chicks 6 April 2012, 3:07 pm http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/feed/ Happy Easter Dunn’s Bakery has a truly delicious Easter selection.  Our tempting tasty Hot Cross Buns come in a huge range from the traditional to Low GI and Cranberry; these were specially produced here in our Bakery and are now a firm favourite along with our wholemeal and spelt varieties.  There is something for everyone!  Our traditional Hot cross Buns are made to a classic Dunn’s recipe, spicy, flavoursome and Moorish! Whatever the occasion we can make an anniversary cake to suit your celebration.  Last year was the 20th Year of National Doughnut Week and our cake decorator Neil made a fun Doughnut shaped cake. What about cup cakes or cookies to earmark a company or corporate anniversary? The iconic Kenwood Chef celebrates its 65th anniversary this year.  Locally The Haringey Phoenix Book Club for the blind will be celebrating their third anniversary this year; here at Dunn’s we have made their cake for their previous celebrations.  So if your school, club or group have an upcoming anniversary – have a cake and really make it an occasion! How about in this year of patriotic celebrations a cake decorated with your country’s flag on it, especially to celebrate this year’s Olympic Games.  Just remember that anniversaries are personal to you – we have heard of cakes made to commemorate the anniversary of a divorce, as the happy divorcee said that it marked the beginning her new life! It was the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens birth  on the 7th February so what a fantastic opportunity to have an open book style cake with photo images of some of his beloved characters such as Nicholas Nickleby or Uriah Heep. In 2011 the magazine found that brides were being much more careful about how the wedding money was being spent. However, the wedding industry will be glad to hear that Wedding Magazine is finding that Brides are in fact increasing their spending in certain areas, particularly those which brides feel are most important to them. There is no doubt that wedding expectations are subjective to each individual couple and each couple will consider different things to be more important than others. Be it the wedding dress, the venue, the food or the wedding cake, each couple has different priorities. Below is a table which breaks down the average wedding costs for 2012. Item Average Cost Insurance £110 The Service £520 Reception (venue, food & drinks) £4,000 Evening Reception (venue, food & drinks) £1,700 Entertainment £850 Flowers £685 Balloons & Decorations £460 The Bride’s Outfit £1,590 Hair and Beauty £170 The Groom’s Outfit £200 Attendants Outfits £575 Photography £905 Videography £905 Transport £480 Stationery £465 The Wedding Cake £370 Wedding Rings £630 Gifts £205 Stag & Hen Nights £280 Honeymoon & First night hotel £3,400 However it is important to note that the table above is an average and therfore there will be plenty of couples who have a smaller budget and plenty with a bigger budget. The main thing to take from Wedding Magazine is that they have seen an increase in wedding budgets following a year when wedding budgets reduced which is a real positive for anyone involved in the wedding industry to be happy about. ... http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/465/average-wedding-budgets-go-up-in-2012 http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/465/average-wedding-budgets-go-up-in-2012 26 January 2012, 1:54 pm http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/feed/ Christening Cakes According to wedding traditions, the top tier of the wedding cake is normally used at the Christening or Baptism of your first child, that’s all well & good we here you cry… but what if you didn’t have a fruit cake or this is not your first Christening, well I mean you can hardly keep a sponge cake for that long… At Dunn’s while we are all for Tradition, (well we have been in Crouch End since 1820) & while we really love the idea, it really is such a sweet tradition, if you had a fruit cake that’s no problem (especially if it’s your first child – or even Twins, heaven forbid you would have any more after that!) we can for those traditionalists amongst you remove the old icing & re-ice your cake, just ask. But what if you didn’t have a fruit cake! Or you want a light sponge christening cake Dunn’s is here to help …from the simply decorated Vanilla sponge with Jam (we only use Tiptree Jam) & Buttercream to the Traditional Fruit & everything inbetween can make the lot we can  even do an Egg Free Sponge – that is superb!!  We also do a range of styles to suit any discerning taste, whether it’s Open Books, Crosses & Tiered Cakes & If cherubs or toys are your thing then don’t worry we have those as well. The only day which can even come close to competing is Christmas or perhaps going to Disneyland. But your birthday is always going to be at the top of the list because it is a day just for you. Children’s birthday parties will always be different, but if there is one thing which they should all have in common it is the birthday cake. As a young child blowing out the birthday cake candles and making a wish is a big deal. Every parent wants to make their child feel special and their birthday, up to a certain age at least, is a great way to show just how special they are. We buy them that one toy that they haven’t stopped talking about for weeks, plus a few more, and we invite all their friends and give them a personalised photo cake of their favourite cartoon character. The ability to have any photograph on your cake makes that birthday cake, wedding cake, anniversary cake, bar mitzvah cake, christening cake, corporate cake that little bit extra special and memorable. For adults, photo cakes are a great opportunity for comedy as any embarrassing photo can be put on a cake and guarantee laughter, embarrassment and a great tasting cake. ... http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/356/photo-cakes-for-all-ages http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/356/photo-cakes-for-all-ages 11 January 2012, 12:17 pm http://www.dunns-bakery.co.uk/blog/feed/ Happy New Year It’s a new year and there will be a lot going on with the Queen’s diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics. The award was given to Christopher  for his commitment to the Baking industry, dedication to the training of future bakers and his charity  fundraising.  He founded National Doughnut week over twenty years ago and has to date raised more than £740,000 for children’s charities.  Christopher also supports local charities and always tries to donate either baked goods or vouchers for Dunn’s Bakery products. As past president of Allied Bakery Student Training ( ABST) in 2010 and president-elect of  The National Association of Master Bakers for 2012 his dedication to the baking industry is  paramount in everything he does .  Whether it’s training visiting bakery students to devising new bakery products  such as the New ” redemption ale bread”  Made from locally brewed beer in Tottenham Christopher’s commitment comes from being a fifth generation baker – baking is truly in his blood. Baker of the Year finalist BIA Awards 2011 Christopher was also a finalist for The Baker of the year at the BIA awards.  Although the award was won by Ditty’s Bakery of Castledawson there was only half a point difference between the winner and runner-up.   All  three finalists including David Smart of Greenhalgh’s  Bakery in Bolton were all bakeries that focussed on promoting not only the baking industry and it’s craft but also  their  links to the local community. On Tuesday 8th March there was a programme hosted by Michel Roux Junior called “The Great British Food Revival” on it he spoke passionately about “real” bread stating that “Making ‘real’ bread is a labour of love”. Michel filmed his bakery scenes here in Dunn’s and we are very proud that as craft bakery to promote the craft and the industry.    The power lies with the customer- if they refuse to buy industrial made bread and support their local Craft Baker then this will ensure that real bread at reasonable prices that reflect the quality ingredients and the skill that goes into every loaf will be more available. So come on support real Bread – accept no imitations and ensure that the bread you buy  is hand crafted  and baked fresh daily for the best possible loaf your money can buy! Not only providing the firm favourites such as our doughnuts but also new future favourites like our spelt and cranberry muffins and GI bread which is one of our best sellers!
