Dunn’s of Crouch End is a family owned bakery, set up by Christopher and his wife Christina. Christopher is a fifth generation baker.
Christopher’s great-great-Grandfather, Robert Freeman, came down from Brackley, Northamptonshire in 1820 on a hay wagon and started work as a baker in South Grove, Highgate.
In 1827 Robert Freeman started the first Freeman family owned business on Highgate Hill.
Christopher and Christina Freeman live in Crouch End are pleased to be part of the local community and to be able to support many initiatives.

Christopher is a fifth generation Master Baker and Lewis, his son who manages the bakery, is the sixth generation as the tradition continues.
Behind The Scenes of The Bakery
Dunn’s Bakery has a huge team of expert bakers and staff who, every day, provide for big crowds of local customers. Without our Team, Dunn’s Bakery wouldn’t be the professional establishment it is today.
Regular visitors to the shop may be surprised to hear that behind the scenes at Dunn’s Bakery in North London, Crouch End is a myriad of rooms in which our experienced and trained craftspeople make our products from scratch using the finest ingredients.
Upstairs, our full time cake decorator finishes our spectacular birthday, wedding and other celebration cakes. All our breads and cakes are individually made. Christopher Freeman tells a story of how he visited a cake decoration company and found that the operatives wrote the names on the cake whilst they were travelling along a conveyor belt!!! No such thing in our cake decorating department! Neil takes time to make sure that we meet your expectations for a cake which really creates the occasion. For Easter and Christmas Neil gets the chocolate making machine out to make seasonal chocolate treats.
Sandwiches Rolls and Salads
Also upstairs is our sandwich, roll and salad making department where our staff create delicious combinations for the tastiest take away in town. Our vegetables, salad and fruit is delivered (or collected) daily so everything is fresh for you. This is where sausages and bacon from Morleys Butchers in Crouch End are cooked and put into rolls and sandwiches; there is nothing as good as our bacon roll for breakfast
Cakes Confectionery and Bread
Our selected array of tempting delicacies are made with only the finest and freshest ingredients, produced to Dunn’s own traditional recipes.
Downstairs we have 3 separate departments:
Peter makes all our fantastic cream cakes and finishes the fancy cakes which have you drooling. If you haven’t tried the fruit flans (portion or whole) you have been missing out
In the confectionery bakery, Scott leads a team which produces a wide range of sweet and savoury treats including our world famous doughnuts, wide range of Danish pastries and many other buns, cookies, cakes and savouries
Our bread bakery has ancient bread ovens which help to give our bread that traditional look and taste. Keller leads the team of very experienced bakers who are able to produce a variety of breads that you just wouldn’t get anywhere else.
Fresh & local Ingredients
We source locally if at all possible
Our selected array of tempting delicacies are made with only the finest and freshest ingredients sourced from local suppliers and produced to Dunn’s own traditional recipes. Christopher Freeman is passionate about quality and that starts with finding the best possible ingredients.
Long before local sourcing of ingredients became trendy Christopher used local suppliers as much as possible. We get our delicious smoked salmon from Purkis fish shop in Crouch End, all our fresh meat for our savouries from Morleys Butchers and fruit, vegetables and salad from New Covent Garden. Crouchenders will know what a special place Crouch End is and the independent food shops support each other not just because it supports the Crouch End economy in North London but because the quality of the food available!
Nearly all our flour comes from Wrights Flour Mills in Ponders End, London’s only remaining flour mill. They, like us, have survived over the generations and take a real pride in supplying reliable and excellent ingredients.

Supporting the Community
Christopher, Christina and Lewis Freeman live in Crouch End are pleased to be part of the local community and to be able to support many initiatives. Christopher is proud to support many local fund raising activities, including the Fun Run and Crouch End Festival Choir.
We welcome school visits to the bakery and take students for work experience from local secondary schools. Dunn’s Bakery is at the heart of Crouch End in North London and is proud to be part of a great local experience of good quality local independent food shops. Christopher is chair of Crouch End Traders which works to promote Crouch End as a good shopping experience for all.
We have supported the YMCA Fun Run every year since in started – donating a Jam Doughnut for every runner.
